Academic Space Committee

Purpose and Mission

The ƵAcademic Space Committee’s mission is to align academic space utilization with SMU’s mission and strategic goals. The committee reports to the Provost and provides policies and guidance on appropriate use of academic space, reviews the usage of classroom, research, and academic space, and, in conjunction with the Provost, works to ensure that allocation and utilization of academic space is done in such a way as to ensure excellence in teaching, research, artistic production, and scholarship.

Reporting Structure

The ƵAcademic Space Committee is located in the Office of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness and reports to the Provost. All recommendations and decisions of the ƵAcademic Space Committee are sent to the Provost for review and approval.

Authority

Recommendations of the ƵAcademic Space Committee are sent to the Provost for review and final decision-making. Decisions of the Provost regarding academic space are final.

ƵUniversity Space Standards for Administrative/Office Space

Ƶhas established space assignment guidelines for academic personnel.  All units are expected to assign administrative office space in accordance with these guidelines.  Periodic reviews of space assignments may occur.  New space requests from academic units are contingent upon a review to ensure that all existing space is assigned in accordance with these guidelines.
